Significant bonding and playtime with parents is important to childrens' development.
Dadventures, put on by Fort Saskatchewan Families First Society, seeks to provide an opportunity for one-on-one time for dads and their kids.
The program started nearly two years ago. Though it didn't catch on right away, it has since become quite popular.
"There are so many programs that either cater specifically to moms and young kids or are just very feminine," said Samantha Trombley, parent link enhancement coordinator at Families First Society. "Men don't necessarily always want to come out and make crafts and the like."
Dadventures is held for one hour every week and features both themed activities and free play.
"Mostly, it's a space for dads to come and bond with their kids where nobody is going to tell them how to play," said Trombley.
Many Alberta fathers work long days, or work away from home, so programs like Dadventures are especially important in the area.
"Moms typically play differently than dads do," Trombley said. "The more support a child has, the better they are likely to do."
The Fort Saskatchewan Families First Society generally caters to children under six, but older siblings are welcome as well.
