Westpark's commercial area will not be allowed to house any cannabis stores.
Fort Saskatchewan City Council recently approved new zoning for the area, banning cannabis retail shops.
"Given that the Westpark development site is nestled right amongst housing behind it, council did make a decision to ask the developer to have cannabis removed from a permitted use," said mayor Gale Katchur.
Council felt the cannabis stores could pose some risk.
"We think it's a good decision and the developer was very accommodating," added Katchur.
Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) announced on Wednesday (Nov.21) that no new cannabis retail licenses will be issued due to a nationwide product shortage.
