The longest serving firefighter in the Fort and in Canada has passed away.

On Monday (November 20), Walter Thomaszewski, better known as Walter Thomas, passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital at 95.

“All of us at the City of Fort Saskatchewan, particularly the Fire Department, are deeply saddened by the news of Walter’s passing," said mayor Gale Katchur. "Walter Thomas is a legend in the city."

Thomas joined the department on May 1, 1947 and was a prominent figure in the fire department, even to this day.

"This leaves probably one of the biggest holes in our heart," explained Katchur. "He has left his legacy, he's touched so many hearts in Fort Saskatchewan, we were so proud of him and what he meant to our city."

Following his years of active service, he became the department historian and in 2013, the fire station was renamed in his honour.

"I guess the Good Lord needed him up in heaven more than we needed him here and we are so going to miss him."

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alice Thomas.
