Southfort Bend Gardens was a busy place, as the longest serving volunteer firefighter in Canada celebrated his birthday.

With friends and family in attendance, Fort Saskatchewan's own Walter Thomas turned 95.

"Walter is such an icon in our community," said Gale Katchur, mayor of Fort Saskatchewan. "It's just so exciting and heartwarming to be here and celebrating with him."

Thomas, who has a fire station in the Fort named after him, has been a huge community influence and long standing resident.

Thomas served the local fire department for 70 years. He officially retired on May 2.
