Sturgeon County has signed off on a landmark emergency management plan, ensuring they're disaster ready.

Sturgeon County developed the Regional Emergency Management Plan (REMP) along with Redwater, Legal, Morinville, Gibbons and Bon Accord with the support and approval from the Minister of Municipal Affairs.

“The REMP represents a collaborative approach to regional emergency planning and response - a united approach by municipalities and the province in the case of a regional, or cross jurisdictional emergency,” said regional committee chair and Redwater's mayor, Mel Smith.

The plan promotes planning and preparedness; response; recovery and mitigation.

“Municipal Councils, CAO’s and emergency management personnel have all been involved and have come to this agreement. Each municipality has emergency management plans in place, however, when required, a Regional Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) will be activated to support an emergency or disaster,” explained Smith.

Next steps will involve maintaining training and readiness, as well as ensuring the Emergency Plan is kept current.
