Fire season is blazing through Sturgeon County. Literally.

As of Monday (May 7), the Sturgeon County Fire Department has responded to 44 grass, brush and wildland fires in 2018.

"We haven't had any problems getting to them, because the units that we're using are specifically designed for wildland, they handle the conditions just fine," said Sturgeon County deputy fire chief Brad Reid.

Dry conditions continue to be the main factor, but numerous instances of careless welding/grinding and sparks from vehicles have also caused problems.

In comparison, the department responded to a total of 66 wildfires in 2017. A lower number according to Sturgeon County fire chief Pat Mahoney.

Recently Sturgeon County fire crews were busy with a bush fire near Lamoureux.
