New rules are in place for hired drivers in Strathcona County.
As of this month, the new Vehicle for Hire Bylaw mandates that all vehicle for hire permits issued in Strathcona County are valid for one year.
Vehicles for hire include taxis, limousines and accessible taxis; this bylaw does not include Uber or Tap Car, as they are already provincially regulated.
Additionally, a yearly Alberta Motor Vehicle Record of Inspection is now required.
"This is aimed at the safety, health and welfare of the people using any form of a vehicle for hire," explained Inspector Chris Narbonne of municipal bylaw for Strathcona County.
Vehicle for hire drivers must have their permit on display, or may provide it through a mobile application— a licence plate also counts as a display of the vehicle permit.
Penalties, fines and fees are all the exact same as the previous Taxi Cab Safety Bylaw.
