A scary morning in the Capital Region has police in both Alberta and Saskatchewan on the hunt.

This morning (October 12) at roughly 12:30 a.m. Strathcona County RCMP were told Edmonton Police Services were following a black Ford Fusion into the county after an armed carjacking.

At the same time, Strathcona RCMP raced to the Holiday Inn Express on Broadmoor Boulevard as reports of shots fired came in.

A man had been shot in the shoulder and neck area. He was conscious and appeared to have non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to be treated.

Five minutes later, at 12:35 a.m., the black Ford was involved in another armed carjacking with a shotgun at the Flying J gas station. A black Chrysler 300 with Saskatchewan license plates was stolen. Both vehicles fled the scene.

The Ford was later found engulfed in flames on Highway 16 at Range Road 195. Police don't have confirmation yet that the burned vehicle is the same one used in the carjacking.

The Chrysler was seen speeding through the Vegreville area and was later located in Saskatchewan, where it's believed the suspect(s) are currently.

UPDATE: Saskatchewan RCMP are currently on the scene in Maidstone, roughly 300 kilometres east of Fort Saskatchewan along Highway 16, in connection with this morning's events. Maidstone RCMP are asking residents to stay away from areas with police activity and to report anything suspicious to the RCMP.

If there is anyone with any information on the incidents in Strathcona County, call the Strathcona County RCMP at (780) 467-7749 or submit anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
