Today (September 23) marked the official grande opening of SouthPointe School.

Elk Island Public Schools board chair Trina Boymook, along with various dignitaries, stood with students as the plaque and Alberta flag were presented.

The school opened it's doors to 322 students on August 30, boasting over 5,545 square metres of space and a population that will grow over the next few years as junior high grades are added.

"SouthPointe School sets the bar for future educational facilities and inspires educational excellence," said Boymook. "We could not be more proud.”

Elementary students get first dibs on the state-of-the-art classrooms, equipped with the latest technology; a collaborative learning commons; innovative learning spaces such as the foods lab, science labs and open-concept drama and music room; as well as several flexible spaces to enhance learning opportunities.

The school's design and grade configuration were approved back in early 2016.
