With it looking like winter could be here to stay, school buses also have to get prepared.

Even with winter maintenance, the decision to suspend school bus service in the Elk Island Public School School (EIPS) division is -40 C.

"But it may only be suspended for one route or one region and not necessarily for all," said Laura McNabb, Elk island Public Schools communications director.

That temperature does include wind chill and school divisions have the right to cancel service if heavy snowfall and other conditions such as freezing rain occur.

"If there is bus service in the morning but conditions don't allow us to continue bus service in the afternoon, parents would have to come and get the kids then," added McNabb.

If parents do choose to bring their kids to school when the buses aren't running they are responsible for picking them up.

EIPS has over 200 buses running on a regular basis, current bus statuses can be found here.
