Mar.18-24 is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week.
Police want to remind motorists that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can cost lives and lead to criminal charges.
In support of the week, RCMP will be upping their presence on the roads and conducting checkstops throughout the area.
Cst. Hayley Townsend of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP reminded drivers to plan for a safe way home.
"Take a taxi. Call a friend. Just try to make some alternate arrangements. At the end of the day, you don't want to see yourself get hurt or in any trouble."
Impaired driving is a leading cause of traffic deaths and injury in Alberta.
Alberta RCMP issued 4,290 impaired driving violations and 1,758 roadside suspensions in 2017. In the first two months of 2018, 538 impaired driving violations have been issued.
