Missed calls could be part of a global scam.
In this 'one-ring scam' a call is made and then quickly ended. Other than the nuisance, there's no danger, unless you call back.
"By you calling out to a foreign number, you're going out on an international network. And that's how they're able to create.... long distance charges," said Dan Lheureux, owner of Cambridge Electronics (TELUS dealer) in the Cornerstone Mall.
Charges can start at $20/minute. In some instances, it's over $100/minute.
"Just avoid them," added Lheureux, who claims he's seen the issue in Fort Saskatchewan.
He also suggests blocking the numbers and reporting the incidents.
Calls seem to originate from places like Albania, Seychelles and Macedonia.
