Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood came home from Ukraine with new opportunities for the Heartland.
Littlewood and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Deron Bilous, attended the 20th annual International Trade Fair of Oil and Gas in Kiev.
"We took a trade delegation of Alberta-based oil, gas and engineering companies that could make contacts with companies over there to look for business opportunities, really demonstrate an Alberta presence at an important conference like that."
Ukraine has similar industry needs as Alberta, they're looking to open up the shale reserves to secure their energy independence. There's also plenty of opportunities for companies to tap into Ukraine's agricultural industries.
"I've given some contacts between contacts and we'll see how the conversation develops."
Alberta and Ukraine have a long history together, with Alberta exporting an average (2012-2016) of $14.7 million worth of goods to Ukraine, the province imported $4.2 million worth of materials.
The trade relationship was boosted in August with the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement entering into force with Littlewood chairing The Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations.
