A number of buildings in Sherwood Park remained closed on Wednesday (Nov.7) after a reported fire Tuesday night in the Strathcona County Community Centre, county hall and library complex.
Police and emergency crews responded to the scene of the reported fire at about 8 p.m. Roads in the area were blocked off, with police asking the public to stay away from the area due to safety concerns.
Strathcona County announced on its Twitter feed Wednesday morning that an RCMP investigation into the incident was continuing and that leads were being followed up as needed.
County mayor Rod Frank posted an update on his Facebook page Wednesday morning, saying that RCMP worked at the community centre throughout the night.
“The police matter is contained to the community centre building and there is not any safety risk to the general public,” Frank said.
Closed buildings include the community centre, county hall, the Strathcona County Library, Salisbury Composite High School and St. Theresa School. The road closures also remain in effect.
RCMP will be providing an update on the situation late Wednesday morning.
