Wildfires in the area caused some serious destruction.

Two large blazes in Strathcona County and Lamont County burned over 300 hectares of land, destroying 43 power poles and leaving 80 (primarily oilfield) customers without power.

"We had to replace all of those poles once it was safe to go back in there," said Kevin Haslbeck, communications advisor with FortisAlberta.

Seven four-man construction crews, one pole testing crew and one forestry crew were able to replace the poles in less than a week.

"We had to use some special equipment because of the cross country and sandy conditions," added Haslbeck.

Two Nodwells and four Hydrovac trucks were needed.

Because of the lingering smoke and ash, crews were required to wear safety masks while working.
