The Fort Saskatchewan Legion is mourning the passing of leader Alice Tomaszewski (Thomas).

Thomas passed away at the age on 93 on October 14, less than a year after her late husband Walter.

Coming over to Fort Saskatchewan from Scotland as a war bride, Thomas quickly asserted herself as a strong leader in the community. She became a leader at the Legion and formed the local Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a volunteer Block Parent for several decades on top of raising her own seven children.

"She has been so instrumental in building this community," said mayor Gale Katchur. "She's going to be deeply missed amongst all of us."

Last year, she received one of the highest awards given by the Ladies Auxiliary, the Palm Leaf Meritorious Service Award, for 70 years of service.

There will be a memorial service at the Fort Saskatchewan Legion at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Oct.27).
