Sherwood Park's newest school is almost ready to open its doors.

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has given their final update on the construction of Davidson Creek Elementary.

The new school is expected to be done in August. Crews are finishing up the gymnasium, lighting, bathrooms, classrooms and painting.

"I had an opportunity to tour the school in late May and it's just amazing to see the amount of work that's taking place all at the same time in different sections of the building," said Trina Boymook, the board chair of EIPS. "We are on schedule to have kids walk through the door this fall."

Strathcona County's new K-6 school will feature a large glass front. Other work on the outside of the building (including the parking lot) is expected to be finished next month.

The school on Davenport Drive will house a maximum of 600 students. Final costs are not yet known.

Some important upcoming dates include an open house on Aug.29 and the first instructional day on Sept.4.
