A fire from last week has emergency crews scratching their heads.

At 1:40 a.m. on Friday (Sept.7), the Strathcona County Fire Department responded to a barley field fire just beside Highway 21.

When crews arrived they found an abandoned car and most of the field on fire. Crews worked for a few hours to confine the blaze to just the immediate area.

The origin of the fire is still unclear and the 80 acre field will most likely be a total loss for the farmer.

"We actually deployed our drone team to assist the investigation. Sometimes when we get an areal view, it can help us determine a point of origin. But we're still just tying up that investigation," said Tim Moen, deputy chief of Strathcona County Emergency Services.

The fire department responded to a helicopter crash in the same field two weeks prior.

No injuries were reported, an investigation is ongoing.
