A grass fire northeast of Bruderheim has been contained, but crews are still working to contain another large fire northwest of the town.

Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont County and Strathcona County fire departments are battling a wildfire northwest of Bruderheim in Strathcona County.

The blaze covering over 240 hectares is burning just south of Township Road 564A between Range Road 212 and Highway 830.

"We've been on this fire since Saturday (May 12) at about noon, today the fire has picked up in intensity due to the warm temperatures and dry winds," said Bob Scott, Strathcona County deputy fire chief.

The fire is not classified as under control yet, but it is considered "held," meaning it has stopped spreading for the time being.

No mandatory evacuation was issued, but multiple households did choose to leave due to the smoke.

Investigators were on scene last night. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

In Lamont County, fire crews have contained a large fire, however, around 18 homes have been put on standby for evacuation.
