The City of Fort Saskatchewan is one step closer to acquiring 952 hectares of land from Strathcona County.
On Tuesday (Apr.9), city council passed a motion to submit an annexation application to the Municipal Goverment Board (MGB), following the county's endorsement of a report on negotiations.
In September of 2018, the two municipalities signed an agreement supporting a negotiated annexation and an exploration of a more formal alliance.
"We are working well with Strathcona County and we have come to many mutual understandings about what success looks like for this region," said mayor Gale Katchur. "Having an uncontested annexation is truly a success story and it speaks to the rest of the region that we all need to work together if we're going to be successful."
Last year, the city held two seperate open houses to share details of the agreement with the public. Following those, they received two landowner response forms in opposition to the annexation.
With the application now having been submitted, the MGB will schedule a merit hearing before a final decision is made.
Katchur added that the city has requested an effective date for the annexation of Jan.1, 2020.
