Alberta schools will only be closed for one reason this winter.

From elementary to high school, a closure will only come into effect if staff members can't make it in the doors.

"Even when we suspend bus service, often times the school is still open and running and classes are still happening," said Laura McNabb, Elk island Public Schools (EIPS) communications director. "If it was really extreme weather conditions the principal would consult with the superintendent and they could make the decision to close the school to students and staff."

In these extreme conditions, parents, media and staff will all be notified of the decisions made by the school board.

"Even in a case like that, there would likely be one or two people at the school in case the message didn't get through."
