Bruderheim councillor Virginia Diffferenz got a bit more than she bargained for on a recent hike.
While on a hike on the Muskeg Creek Park trails near Athabasca, Differenz stumbled upon two black bears.
She recalled one being smaller than the other, concluding the pair must have been a sow and cub.
Differenz alerted the bears to her presence by waving her hiking poles and playing music on her phone, only perking the cub's interest.
An accidental re-dial of a relative in Athabasca prompted that relative to phone the RCMP, who rescued Differenz via quad.
The RCMP urge anyone entering wildlife areas should bring a whistle, bear spray and a hiking partner.
Since Differenz's encounter, signs have been posted at the start of the trail, notifying hikers that bears have been spotted in the area.
