Strathcona County RCMP are warning of a new twist on an old scam.
Fraudsters have kicked it up a notch by incorporating Bitcoin into the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam in Strathcona County.
RCMP have noticed this variation of the CRA scam popping up in the past month.
Through a telephone call, victims are told they have overdue taxes to pay and if they don’t pay, they will be arrested. Previously, the victims were asked for gift cards or iTunes cards, this time they're told to send their money using Bitcoin ATMs, which convert real money into Bitcoin and then transfer the funds to the caller.
RCMP are reminding the public the CRA does not ask for payment to be made through gift cards or Bitcoin and would never use the phone as a first point of contact.
If anyone believes they may be a victim of fraud, call the Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can be reached at 1-888-495-8501.
