Lamont County is looking to reduce the risk of fires.

Due to increasing wildfire risk in the area, the province has placed a ban on all ATV use in the Bruderheim Natural Area.

"This is a very volatile area. Because it is crown land there's not a lot that goes on so we end up with deadfall trees, grass and old leaves that build up over the years, so any spark could set it off," said Lamont County communications coordinator Heather Atkinson. "This is where we had our fire in 2009 in this area and this recent fire has been probably caused by a similar concern."

Officials will be enforcing the rules. Anyone caught could face a fine of up to $575.

The large wild land fire in Lamont County was considered contained as of 9 a.m. on Monday (May 14).

An environmental hotline is set up for residents to report ATV usage or hazards in the area (1-800-222-6514).
