ATCO Gas is reminding people to make sure their natural gas meters are kept clear of snow and ice.

Fort Saskatchewan and surrounding areas recently got 25 cm of snowfall. While everyone knows to shovel their sidewalks, they might not think about checking their gas meters.

"For natural gas meters it's just making sure that there isn't a build up of snow and ice to ensure proper operations," said an ATCO representative who could not be named. "It's just a small percentage of meters that get buried. In general just check them and make sure they are clear and we say the same thing as well for appliance venting."

If things are not operating properly there's an increased risk of carbon monoxide exposure within the home.

Meters should be kept clear of any debris all year-round.

Anyone who has concerns with their natural gas meter can call ATCO at 780-310-5678.
