The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a teenager died in a vehicle rollover on the Sherwood Park Freeway.

The 16-year-old boy was in a stolen SUV being investigated by Strathcona County RCMP. The rollover happened minutes after police stopped chasing the vehicle.

The incident began at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 15) when Strathcona County RCMP followed a stolen silver GMC Yukon to a commercial address on Broadmoor Boulevard in Sherwood Park. RCMP tried unsuccessfully to use their vehicles to box in the SUV and apprehend its three occupants.

The driver of the Yukon steered it out of the parking lot with police in pursuit. Police continued following the SUV until they were instructed to stop the chase.

About seven minutes later, RCMP received a 911 call about a single-vehicle rollover on the Sherwood Park Freeway. The vehicle involved was confirmed to be the stolen Yukon. A 16-year-old boy was found dead in the front passenger seat. Two men in their early twenties ran from the scene and were arrested a short time later.

According to ASIRT, RCMP will continue investigating the possible criminal actions of the occupants of the SUV.

"ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the police interaction with the vehicle and whether it was lawful," the police watchdog said in a release.

No other information is available at this time.
