Last Thursday (June 8), the lacrosse world was stunned with the passing of an up and coming athlete.

Darian Mar died after being hit by a van while riding his bicycle in St. Albert. Now, with the help of two of the top senior lacrosse teams in Alberta and two-time NLL champion John Lintz, money is being raised to support the Mar family and his teammates.

A Gofundme page was started on Monday (June 12), and raised over $20,000 in less than 24 hours; the page now sits at over $26,000 and is still growing.

"[Mar] was also a member of the Bantam A Wizards lacrosse team based out of North Edmonton and St. Albert. Through his dedication as a lacrosse player and kind, caring heart he has inspired the team to raise money for his family in the hopes that they may cover funeral costs and a special trip or purchase for their family. This initiative is entirely motivated and directed by Darian's teammates, most of whom are 13 and 14 and are also suffering great loss," said Lintz.

A memorial game will be played on Saturday (June 17), in memory of Darian at the Jubilee Recreation Centre at 8:00 p.m. between the St. Albert Sr. Miners and the Edmonton Sr. Warriors.

"The evening is all about [Mar], lacrosse is referred to sometimes as the medicine game and we're just trying to use it as a way to help a group who is suffering a tragic loss to heal a little bit," said Erik Turner of the Warriors.

All of the 50/50 proceeds from the game will support a team event for the Edmonton Bantam A Wizards.
