After the Fort Saskatchewan Senior AAA Chiefs folded in November, some of the players made the most of their opportunity.
With the Allan Cup being hosted in Lacombe this year, Michael and Dallas Desjarlais, Ryan Smith and Darren Reid all joined the Innisfail Eagles mid-season to make a run at senior hockey's most prestigious trophy.
All four of the former Chiefs played a part in Innisfail's provincial series victory over the Stony Plain Eagles.
"It was an absolute war zone. Guys left it all out there. Stony Plain played well, but we came out on top," said Michael Desjarlais. "Guys have been in the league for a lot of years and they're just finally getting their chance to go to the Allan Cup."
Desjarlais had a total of 12 points in 13 regular season and playoff games since joining the Eagles of the Allan Cup Hockey West.
Since beginning operations in 1947, Innisfail has never had a team make it to the Allan Cup.
"It's actually really surreal. Everyone is coming together and gelling at the right time," added Desjarlais. "This definitely tops my hockey experiences, for sure."
The Eagles' roster also features former Chief Richard Kelly and Fort Sask Midget AAA Ranger Shawn Bates.
Innisfail will play the opening game at the Allan Cup on Apr.8 against the Rosetown Red Wings.
Following that game, on Apr.9, they'll face former NHLers Chris Campoli, Tim Kennedy, Tim Kennedy and the Stoney Creek Generals.
