The Alberta Warriors are in what's being deemed the 'group of death' at the Aleš Hřebeský Memorial Tournament.
This year, Alberta will play in Group B, matched up against the Megamen from the United States and the Istanbul Sultans from Turkey.
Last year, Istanbul upset the Megamen in the round robin stage, while in 2017, it was the Megamen shocking the Alberta Warriors in the placement round.
Over the past two tournaments, the Warriors — whose roster mostly plays with the Edmonton Senior B Warriors in Fort Saskatchewan during the summer season — hold an overall record of 7-4.
Alberta won the prestigious tournament back in 2016, with a 7-6 win over the hosts, LC Custodes.
In the last two tournaments, newly drafted Edmonton Senior B Warrior Tyler Sonnichsen has notched 19 goals and ten assists, but he won't be with the team this year due to injury. Captain Greg Bourret will be relied upon again, as the undersized sniper has put up 25 points in 11 games. Goaltender Jon McMillan has carried the workload in net, posting a .775 save percentage in 10 games.
In 2018, the Megamen went 0-2 in round robin play, but bounced back to finish 9th in the tournament with a 4-2 record. Former Canisius College Griffin Michael Blocho led the team last year with 10 goals and six assists in 16 games.
In 2017, the Megamen finished 5th in the tournament, with a record of 5-1. Central Connecticut State University midfielder Nick Godau led the team in scoring with six goals and four assists.
Istanbul Sultans (TUR)
In 2018, Istanbul placed 13th with a 3-3 record. Evan Lovestead provided most of the team's offence with four goals and five assists.
In 2017, the Sultans went 2-4, landing them in 12th spot. Blake MacDonald had a team high eight goals in the tournament.
The Aleš Hřebeský Memorial Tournament will take place from Apr.24-27.
