Elk Island National Park (EINP) is going to be another busy destination for campers this summer.

With campsite booking opening early in 2018, weekends have filled up fast.

"It's been quite popular this year. Our oTENTik and drive-in sites are booked on all weekends until September long," said Catharine Brazeau, communications officer at EINP. "Basically May long weekend is the start of the busier season at Elk Island and many national parks."

Winter camping took off during the mild season and in 2017 the park was busy with over 500,000 visitors.

EINP is expecting to have over 150 bison calves this spring.

"Because the online reservation system is open well ahead of time, people can check whether the night they're looking to camp is fully booked or not," added Brazeau.

Fort Saskatchewan and EINP got a hint of fame in March, as it was listed as one of the top Canadian destinations in the spring.
