Police are continuing to investigate a Morinville fire.
In the early morning hours of June 30, 2021, a fire broke out at the historic St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Morinville, rendering the building a complete loss. The fire was deemed suspicious at the time.
The Morinville RCMP confirmed on Tuesday (Apr. 12) that they are still investigating the blaze.
Meanwhile, rebuilding efforts continue for the iconic church. Approximately 1,000 uncontaminated bricks were salvaged from the clean-up site and sold as keepsakes to raise funds.
"There was a lot of history there," said Gerry Gaetz, fundraising coordinator with the church, in a previous interview.
"I had a hard time driving down Main Street not seeing [the church]; you couldn't even look at the rubble sitting there."
On May 14, the church will host a "FUNdraiser Extravangza" at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre, complete with live entertainment, a 50/50 draw and a silent auction.
