A local ski centre has been ranked as one of the best.
The Strathcona County Wilderness Centre was recently placed on USA Today's 10 best cross-country ski resorts in North America. The local centre placed ninth.
It was the only place from Alberta on the list. The other Canadian locations were Nipika Mountain Resort from BC in eighth place, and Stokely Creek Lodge in Ontario ranked fourth.
"Well, we were really thrilled, and we were thrilled to be nominated in the top 20. That was a nomination process. There are over 400 cross country ski results resorts in Canada and the United States, and to be chosen among the top 20, it was a real honour. Then to make it into the ninth position and therefore in the top 10 is really, really exciting," said Jean Funk, supervisor of the Strathcona County Wilderness Center.
The wilderness centre has 12 km of trails, sometimes 15 km when they can groom on Bennett Lake. Funk said they take pride in their trails and ensuring they are well-kept for Edmonton-area skiers.
The centre provides ski rentals, lessons, and numerous skiing events during the winter. They recently piloted a new ski orienteering course where skiers can download an app on their phones and find markers as they go along the trails. People can also use the trails for snowshoeing, hiking and more.
The resort is also commonly used for racers training for ski events and has grown its para-nordic training programs over the last few years.
"We're absolutely thrilled to be a hub for cross country skiing here and to continue to provide world-class grooming," added Funk. "We invite everybody to come out and give cross country skiing a try."
