Police arrested a 35-year-old man for the possession of a weapon.
On Saturday (Dec.19) at approximately 11:59 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP stopped a vehicle travelling northbound on Highway 216 (Anthony Henday Drive) for a traffic violation.
During the traffic stop, police noticed a gun between the console and driver's seat, and the man driving the vehicle was arrested.
A search of the vehicle produced a sawed-off shotgun, drug paraphernalia, what is suspected to be GHB and a $100 counterfeit bill.
Police also determined the identification provided by the man at the time of the traffic stop had been altered and that he was prohibited from possessing firearms.
Scott Richard Simpson of no fixed address has been charged with 11 offences, including careless use of a firearm, possession of counterfeit money, possession of a firearm contrary to order and possession of a firearm in a vehicle.
Simpson was taken into custody after a judicial hearing and is set to appear in Sherwood Park Provincial Court on Jan 13.
