Paul Smith had a new look this month.

Strathcona County's Ward 5 councillor dyed his hair bright pink in support of Hair Massacure, an event that raises awareness for children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

"It's about everybody who's faced [cancer] and their families. It's to raise awareness and funds for them to be able to come up with a prevention, cure or whatever it takes," Smith said. "It was kind of out of my wheelhouse and comfort zone to dye my hair pink, but I did so and I was surprised of the amount of awareness that it brought."

On Saturday (Feb.15), he attended the local event in Ardrossan, shaving his pink hair off. In total, his group raised over $2,800 for the Terry Fox Foundation and the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.

"It was an awesome event," added Smith. "A lot of laughs were had and more than a few tears were shed over the stories people chose to share."

Hair Massacure has held a massive annual event in Edmonton since 2003. Friday (Feb.21), it will take place at West Edmonton Mall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
