The Injury Prevention Centre and Finding Balance Advisory Committee launched the 8th Finding Balance campaign, with a message to Alberta seniors to stay active and increase their strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls. To give seniors a fun way to stay active, Finding Balance and UWALK are partnering to offer the Seniors’ Keep Active Challenge where participants count the minutes of physical activity or number of steps they take from November 1-30.
Finding Balance offers four key ways seniors can reduce their risk of falling, the ways they do this is by Keep Active exercise for strength and balance, seniors are reminded to check medications. Other tips given to reduce falls is to always watch Your Step, and to always speak up about dizziness, it is always best to speak to your doctor if dizziness is a concern.
To improve balance, strength and reduce the risk of falls, the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommended that seniors over 65 years of age should do at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic activity a week as well as strengthening exercises for the major muscle groups at least two days per week.
