Five Grade 7 students from Ardrossan Junior Senior High, representing the Ardrossan Bison Robotics Team, were presented with the Strategy and Innovation award at the Lego League Championship, hosted by NAIT on January 16.

The FIRST Lego League Championship is a global program focused on promoting science, technology, and engineering careers to young people.

More than 300 students on 42 teams, designed, built, programmed, and tested a Lego-engineered robot that addressed waste reduction. The students presented their solution to a panel of five judges, all of whom are engineering professionals.

Kohl Pretzlaff, a member of the bison robotics team, says there were multiple events based on teamwork.

"You have to figure out a solution to the worlds trash problem, and then there was a mystery challenge where you don't even know what it is before you enter the room, and there was also a robot game."

"We built a had to push a truck so that the truck would pick up a bin, then dump it, and then come back. The tire had to line up with the sorting machine and then turn the tire."
