A new initiative is aiming to celebrate the North Saskatchewan River.

From Devon to Fort Saskatchewan, a big bash is being planned to appreciate and show off everything the river valley has to offer.

Seven municipalities along the river will host various activities from September 15 to 17 for RiverFest.

"Different communities are doing different things," explained Diane Yanch with the River Valley Alliance. "Strathcona County is going to pitch in with us and provide an activity for our event, but every community is going to be different along the route."

The River Valley Alliance asked for a one time $20,000 funding support from Fort Saskatchewan City Council to help get the event on its legs.

$8,500 would go towards activities, facilities, entertainment and promotions, $7,500 would go to Culture Services staff resources to coordinate and host the event and $4,000 would be for parks and roads support. All money will be pulled from the Financial Stabilization Reserves.

City Council approved the assistance for a one year term only at their March 28 meeting.

More details on RiverFest will be coming out in the next few weeks.
