Strathcona County RCMP is warning residents about issues they've seen on online dating sites.

Some of these sites and social media platforms deal with people asking for pictures or videos that have explicit images. This can lead to the sender possibly being threatened or extorted to pay money, and if they don’t, the pictures or videos will be sent to the person’s family, coworkers and social media friends.

Police say even if money is being paid, the person could still continue to be extorted for more money. This is sometimes called “sextortion."

One of the sites that have been reported a few times and are currently being investigated in the Strathcona County area is Bumble, an online dating app.

RCMP want the public to be aware that when a picture or video is sent out into the social media world, the sender no longer has control over it, so use caution when dealing with these type of social media and dating sites.
