Around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, RCMP received a complaint after an Amazon package was stolen from a home on 108 Street in Fort Saskatchewan. The homeowner called police immediately after his front door camera notified him.
The suspects were quickly located in a parking lot off 99 Avenue, and a man and woman were arrested. A search of their vehicle found the stolen Amazon package and pieces of mail stolen from other residences.
Both have been charged with theft of mail over $5,000 and theft under $5,000 and are due in court on June 9. Police did not provide the suspects’ names.
“Fort Saskatchewan RCMP wish to remind the public of the risks of leaving mail unattended. Personal information can be easily obtained through unattended mail,” police said in a statement.
“More recently, bank fraud has become the most common crime caused by theft of mail. If you are unable to pick up your mail or packages, ensure you have a trusted neighbour or family member looking out for your property in your absence.”
If you have any information regarding mail theft, call the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP at 780-997-7900, your local police, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
