This New Year's Eve was an especially quiet one for police.

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP say they responded to seven calls that night. A few were minor collisions, and a few were complaints about fireworks, although none were related to impaired driving.

"[A] very unseasonable and quiet New Year's Eve for us," said RCMP Constable Lauren Mowbray.

They saw a similar quiet Christmas weekend as well.

Mowbray attributes the quiet end to 2021 to a couple of factors; both weekends were incredibly cold, so fewer people were on the road, and bars had to close by 11 p.m.

Under the Provincial Administrative Penalties Act, impaired drivers can face fines up to $2,000 and lose their vehicle for up to 30 days.
