An area NHL player has secured his contract for another few years.
Brandon Hagel, a 22-year-old from Morinville, signed a $4.5-million three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on Aug.6.
"Brandon's ascension to a regular role last season provided a huge boost to our team," said Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman in a statement. "We were quite pleased with the growth he showed in his game and ability to handle tougher assignments. His continued development at this level will allow him to be a valuable contributor to our offence moving forward."
The Buffalo Sabres selected Hagel in the sixth round in the 2019 NHL Draft. He signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent in 2018 and recorded 24 points in 52 games as a rookie during the 2020-21 season with Chicago.
Hagel will be playing alongside Fort Saskatchewan's Kirby and Colton Dach.
The Blackhawks are scheduled to play their first game against the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 13.
