Alberta Health Services has given the latest COVID-19 numbers for Alberta.
 
1,609 new cases of the virus were reported in the province on Wednesday (Sept.15).
 
Currently, there are 18,421 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta; 877 people are in the hospital, and 218 are in intensive care.
 
The province also reported 24 new deaths Wednesday. A total of 2,495 Albertans have now passed away from COVID-19.
 
Local update
 
The first number is the active case count on Monday (Sept.13) for the area, and the second is the updated total as of Wednesday:
 
- Fort Saskatchewan: 112 cases - 119 cases
- Sherwood Park: 264 cases - 254 cases
- Strathcona County: 101 cases - 108 cases
- Sturgeon County: 139 cases - 131 cases
- Morinville: 66 cases - 55 cases
- Lamont County: 54 cases – 52 cases
 
Fort Saskatchewan has now seen 22 deaths, Sherwood Park is reporting 35 and both Strathcona County and Sturgeon County have seen seven.
 
Several outbreaks of COVID-19 have been reported in the area, including:
 
- Brand Energy Solutions – Shell Scotford Site, Fort Saskatchewan
- Dolphin Child Development Centre – Bon Accord Out of School Care, Bon Accord
- PDH Unit at Heartland Petrochemical Complex, Fort Saskatchewan
- Poundmaker’s Lodge Treatment Centre, Sturgeon County
- R.Q.B. Child Care Centre, Riviere Qui Barre
 
A COVID-19 outbreak was also declared at Woodbridge Farms Elementary School in Sherwood Park.
 
Under the province's back-to-school plan, school administrators and/or school authorities are not required to contact Alberta Health Services (AHS) to report student or staff cases, unless there is a school-wide absence of 10 per cent or more. If AHS finds the absences are due to illness, it may declare an outbreak as is the case at Woodbridge Farms.
 
Vaccinations
 
The total per cent of people fully immunized with the vaccine as of Tuesday:
 
- Fort Saskatchewan: 59.8 per cent
- Sherwood Park: 70.9 per cent
- Strathcona County: 64 per cent
- Sturgeon County West (including Morinville): 56.3 per cent
- Sturgeon County East: 56.2 per cent
- Lamont County: 53.4 per cent
 
5.67-million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the province; 79.5 per cent of eligible Albertans have received at least one dose, while 71.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.
