A Fort Saskatchewan hockey player is looking for a spot on the Canadian World Juniors roster.

Olen Zellweger was one of a handful of local hockey players invited to the selection camp in Calgary.

“It’s a dream to be invited to the camp,” said Zellweger. “It’s been really good and fun so far, so I’m just trying to take it in every day and just trust the process.”

Zellweger, 18, is currently a defenceman with the Everett Silvertips in Washington and was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round (34th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft in mid-July.

In an interview with MIX 107, Zellweger reflected on his favourite World Juniors moment of all time.

“Probably a more recent one, Akil Thomas’ goal against Russia. That was a pretty cool one, it was pretty recent, so I kind of knew of the players on the team a bit, which made it pretty cool.”

Also invited to the selection camp were Sherwood Park’s Kaiden Guhle and former Fort Saskatchewan Ranger Sebastian Cossa.

The 2022 Hockey World Juniors run from Dec.26 to Jan.5 in Edmonton and Red Deer.
