A firefighter was injured helping battle a fire in Sherwood Park.

Tuesday night (Oct.19), at around 10:30 p.m., Strathcona County Emergency Services was alerted to the fire in the Summerwood neighbourhood. Smoke was visible at the back of the house, and the flames were moving up to the second floor and into the attic.

"We were able to get it under control rather quickly, although there's still quite a bit of smoke and fire damage done, mostly to the roof and the upper floor of the structure itself," said Strathcona County deputy fire chief Devin Capcara.

While fighting the blaze, one firefighter had his leg fall through the burning deck and received first and second-degree burns to his leg as well as some abrasions. He was taken to the hospital but was released not long after.

All the residents of the house were able to evacuate without injury.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing. It is believed the fire started outside by the deck behind the house, and the wind caused it to quickly spread. The cause is still unknown, although it is not deemed suspicious.

Little to no damage was done to the adjacent houses.
