The University of Alberta Golden Bears is coming home with a silver medal.

The Bears took the silver medal after going into double-overtime against the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) Patriotes on Sunday (Apr. 3). Alberta dominated the first and second periods but ultimately fell to the Patriotes 5-4.

Scoring opened in the first period with a goal by Matt Fonteyne, assisted by Ardrossan's Grayson Pawlenchuk. Alberta continued to dominate through the first and second periods, with goals from Luc Smith and two scored by Noah Philp for a 4-2 lead after the second.

UQTR took to the offensive in the third period, scoring two goals to tie the game. Patriotes centre Simon Lafrance scored the winning goal with less than six minutes on the board for the second overtime, following 15 shots on net by the Golden Bears and six others by UQTR.

This season, local players have been an instrumental part of the Bears' success. Fort Saskatchewan's Erik Florchuk helped propel the bears to the championships with a goal during the Canada West Finals. Florchuk was also selected to the U SPORTS Championship All-Star Team.

Other local players include Jake Bennett of Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park's Joel Lakusta and Dylan Plouffe.
