Fort Saskatchewan ranked just ahead of Edmonton in a recent list of the best places to live in Canada.

In 67th place, Fort Saskatchewan lagged far behind fifth place Lacombe, the only Alberta city to crack the top five in the 2018 version of Moneysense.ca’s annual ranking. Oakville, Ontario, came in first.

Moneysense used factors such as crime, weather, health, culture and amenities in coming up with its list of the best places to call home. Economy and affordability were given the most weight in the 415-city ranking. Places with lower unemployment rates, higher household incomes and lower housing costs earned more points.

Thanks to its booming population, Fort Saskatchewan did manage to make the top 10 in one category – demographics. Moneysense hands out points based on how many people a city has added during the previous five years, rewarding Fort Saskatchewan for its 21.1 per cent growth.

Canmore was the only other Alberta city in the top 10, coming in 7th. Strathcona County ranked 59th, Edmonton was 68th and Sturgeon County finished at 201st.

Fort Saskatchewan earned 195th spot last year. For 2018 Moneysense tweaked its methods, making year-to-year comparisons less accurate.
