Fort Saskatchewan has been a hot spot for hockey tournaments this year.

The 2022 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships are taking place April 7-10 at the JRC for the Senior AA division. The Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs will play four evening games as the host city.

The Chiefs had a decent season with some challenges, but they made it through. They finished the regular season with a 6-7 record and managed to make it to the first round of playoffs.

According to Chiefs’ president Scott Chartrand, a major obstacle this season was commitment issues, mainly due to COVID-19 and player illness.

“The highlight of the year was being able to actually participate and be playing hockey again,” Chartrand said.

“What’s got us really excited about provincials is that we’re going to be going as a full unit and fully healed up and ready to roll.”

Four teams from across the province will compete in the tournament. The teams will be vying for a spot in the gold medal final on Sunday and a chance to win the provincial crown.

The bronze medal game will take place Sunday morning, while the gold medal match will happen in the afternoon.

The host Chiefs play the following schedule of round-robin games:

  • April 7 at 8:30 p.m. vs winner of the Ranchland Hockey League JRC
  • April 8 at 7:30 p.m. vs winner of the North Central Hockey League JRC
  • April 9 at  7:30 p.m. vs winner of the SaskAlta Hockey League JRC

Chartrand said he is thankful to Hockey Alberta and other sponsors for helping with the tournament.
