Fort Saskatchewan is mourning the loss of Robert Maltby.
Maltby joined the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department on Oct. 24, 1989. He was with the department for over 30 years and also served as a correctional officer for 31 years before retiring in 2020.
"He was a staple and a face that was around here for a long time. [He'd] always give you shirt off his back, that's the kind of guy he was," said assistant Fort Saskatchewan fire chief Doug Stein. "Just a smiling, happy person."
Stein worked with Maltby for many years and remembers him being really fond of cooking during any department functions. He was very social, someone other members could talk to. He also played the role of Santa for a few years at their children's Christmas parties.
Maltby passed away on Mar. 5 at the age of 60. He is survived by his wife Lynne, his sons Daniel and Adam, as well as his in-laws and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held on Mar.14 at the Bear's Den.
