A fire has destroyed the Morinville Plaza Inn and Suites.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Sunday (Nov. 6) evening at about 8:30 p.m. to a two-level structure fire at the hotel.

RCMP and fire crews say they successfully evacuated about 27 residents in the building; no human injuries or deaths were reported. Police did confirm, however, that there were pets who perished in the fire.

The Morinville Fire Department fought the blaze through the night with help from Gibbons, Legal, and St. Albert. At the height of the fire, about 35 firefighters were on the scene.

At this moment, the fire has been extinguished, but the building was destroyed as a result.

The incident is currently under investigation and police do not believe the fire to be suspicious.
