The extreme cold has been wreaking havoc on local skating rinks.

Outdoor rinks have been periodically closed in Fort Saskatchewan due to the extreme temperatures. Barb Holmes with public works explained the deep freeze had created large cracks in the ice surface, and warmer temperatures next week could pose a problem for area rinks.

“The city closes the outdoor ice services when the temperatures plummet to around -25 C, and we also close the rinks if the temperature rises above 5 C,” said Holmes.

She went on to say that crews have quite a few repairs to do but hope to have the rinks in good condition in the next couple of days.
